An 8-day NWS RAW safari exploring the national parks of Kafue and Liuwa Plain, two of Zambia's most untouched wildernesses that are home to an abundance of wildlife. Both are especially renowned for large predators such as leopard, lion, cheetah, hyena and painted dog.

Explore the untamed wilderness and rich wildlife of Kafue National Park and Liuwa Plain National Park, accompanied by expert guides and with visits to the Zambian Carnivore Programme and big cat conservation organisation Panthera. Staying in luxurious lodges within the national parks, you will be in the right place to experience fantastic wildlife encounters. Kafue National Park is one of the best places to see Africa’s big cats such as leopard, lion and cheetah, while the floodplains of Liuwa are home to an extraordinary diversity of birdlife.

Itinerary

Lusaka - Kafue National Park

Upon arrival in Lusaka, you will be met by our local representative and driven to Kafue National Park (approximately 3.5 hours). At the entrance to the park, you will pay a brief visit to the bustling village of Nalusanga with its typical rural shops and market. Travel through the park for an our before reaching Ila Safari Lodge, an eco-lodge on the banks of the Kafue River. Settle in to your lodge, before going on a sunset cruise along the river.

Kafue National Park

Enjoy a morning and afternoon game drive in the national park, in the company of a qualified and knowledgeable guide. The rivers are populated with hippos and crocodiles, and elephants are regularly seen on the sandy banks taking a drink. Kafue National Park is well-renowned as one of the best places to spot leopard, especially at night with the use of a spotlight. Other predators include lions, cheetah and elusive wild dogs as well as a vast array of herbivores and bird species.

Kafue National Park

Today, you will set out on an early morning game drive including a visit to the local Head Quarters of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife. After breakfast back at camp, head out in the camps electric vehicle (the e-Landy) and stop at SAPU, the anti poaching unit located nearby. Return to camp for a leisurely lunch and an early afternoon boat tour in the lodge speedboat to travel further down the river.

Kafue National Park - Liuwa Plain

Bid farewell to Kafue as your transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Liuwa Plain, enjoying spectacular views from the air. On arrival you will set off on a game drive transfer to your camp. Settle into camp and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea before setting out on your first game drive in Liuwa Plain National Park. Situated on the upper Zambezi flood plains of western Zambia, the Liuwa Plain are vast, remote and untamed; characterised by seasonally-flooded grassy plains dotted with wooded islands.

Liuwa Plain

After breakfast, leave camp early and head into the national park to get up close and personal with the wildlife of the Liuwa Plain; blue wildebeest, zebra, red lechwe, eland and tsessebe are abundant. Accompanied by your guide, you may have the opportunity to leave your vehicle and explore the park on foot. The birdlife in Liuwa is extraordinary, and at certain times of year the plains will be occupied by hundreds of pelicans, wattled or crowned cranes, geese and smaller waterbirds. Spend hours with a camera or binoculars watching the multitudes of species come to drink at one of the many watering holes.

Liuwa Plain

Leave camp early today with members of the Zambian Carnivore Program (ZCP), a non-profit research team dedicated to conserving large carnivore species and the ecosystems in which they reside. Spend the morning with the team, tracking some of the large carnivore species which reside in the park, including lion, cheetah and hyena, and learning about the behaviour of individual animals within the prides and packs of the Plain. Arrive back at camp in time for lunch. After lunch you will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation by the ZCP team about the trends and patterns of behaviour of many of the animal species within Liuwa Plain and understand more about the precious recovering ecosystem of the Park. Afterwards, rest and soak up the magical atmosphere of one of the most remarkable vistas in Zambia before afternoon tea and your evening game drive. End the day with sundowners by one of the many hyena dens in the Park. The hyenas are incredibly inquisitive and interested in people; some will even leave the safety of the pack and den to wander closer and observe humans!

Liuwa Plain - Lusaka

Enjoy a final breakfast at camp before being transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Lusaka. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel where you can relax and reflect on your safari.

Today you will be transferred to the airport in time for your international flight home.

Cancellation Policy

Life is unpredictable and we understand that sometimes you have to cancel or change your trip dates and it is our endeavor to make it as easy as possible for you. However, please understand that we plan everything including guide fees, permits, accommodation, and ration in advance. Therefore, any cancellation means inconvenience and certain losses to the people involved in various stages of the program. Keeping that in mind, our cancellation charges are as below,

 

  • Cancellations prior to 30 days from the start of the event: Full refund as cash.
  • Cancellations between 30 days and 15 days to the start of the event: 50 % refund as cash.
  • Cancellations less than 15 days to the start of the event: No refund.
  • Cancellations will be accepted only by email.

 

Note: We reserve the right to cancel a program before departure in the event of logistical problems arising due to natural calamities, strikes, wars or any other circumstances that make the event inadvisable. In this case, we will refund 50% of the event fees.
